Velocity Health

Wayra UK and MSD believe that innovation can come from anywhere and are committed to help to identify, develop, promote and scale UK-based start-ups by leveraging Telefónica’s global resources and MSD’s health and data expertise to be a part of this new exciting era of health tech to support the NHS in providing a health system ready for our digital age.

Velocity Health was set up in 2015 to invest in digital innovation in healthcare to address the challenges outlined in the NHS Five Year Forward View1 and in line with the recommendations outlined in the Life Sciences Strategy. Previous programmes focused on prevention in healthcare with an emphasis on diabetes prevention and cancer prevention. This year, the partners are seeking start-ups who can help with the following challenge: "How technology can help support disease and illness prevention, with a particular focus on start-ups utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning."

SPIRE

In partnership with NHS Scotland, MSD HS provides the infrastructure and system for SPIRE, which gives a national view of Scottish Primary Care data to help monitor the health of the population and enable NHS Scotland to plan and manage future services accordingly. Extracting data from general practice IT systems throughout Scotland, SPIRE will also set up a service to analyse this data for specific and approved purposes, all the while maintaining the highest standard of privacy and patient confidentiality. MSD HS is an enabler of change; harnessing technology, connecting people and providing a fresh perspective that can help transform the wider healthcare environment and the lives of the individuals who rely on it to keep pace with their ever-changing lives.

NHS England Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale (HMR) CCG Test Bed Programme

NHS England has run a competitive process to award “Test Bed” status to a number of NHS organisations and commissioners to develop and deploy real world innovation that, amongst other things, integrate new technologies and bioinformatics. Working with the Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network, Verily (formerly Google Life Sciences) and NHS England, our Test Bed for the Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale CCG area is enabling healthcare professionals to better assess the needs of their patients. Three MSD HS services have been deployed as part of this programme.

MSD Informatics (MSDi), a risk stratification tool which analyses health data, aims to improve patient outcomes by allowing GP practices to identify patients at increased risk of long-term health conditions.

Evidence into Practice (EiP) is a structured clinical change management programme provided by MSD that aims to ensure patients receive optimal care by aiding Primary Care health professionals in the application of national and local guidelines.

Closercare is an MSD remote monitoring service that has been designed to improve direct patient care by combining remote patient monitoring technology with health coaching to help change the lives of patients with long-term conditions. Using advanced predictive techniques, combined with detailed trend analysis, we can then identify which small proportion of patients would benefit most from tele-monitoring and taking control of their own health. These patients can then receive a more personalised and proactive service.
